Responsibilities

Job Purpose: 

  • Performs inspections (mechanical) and surveillances of receiving, in-process, final and field inspections to assure conformance and identified non-compliances with drawings, specifications, standards.
  • Perform and witness acceptance testing and inspections of systems, structures, and components equipment at remote supplier facilities and at PPPL on-site locations.
  • Individual will follow all applicable PPPL safety regulations and PPPL procedures.

 

Core Duties: 

  1. Perform in-process & final inspections of precision machined parts and assemblies as per shop work requests, installation procedures, quality inspection plans, drawings, standards, and technical procedures.

  2. Perform receiving inspections of precision machined parts or items supplied by subcontractors or vendors as per applicable purchase orders, procurement quality assurance clauses, technical specifications, drawings and standards.

  3. Perform audits, surveillances and walkthrough oversight of work activities, and safety conditions.

  4. Perform inspection of fire barrier penetrations and seals and inspections of facilities construction project activities.

  5. Identifies general problem areas that may span many work activities and could potentially impact Lab quality or ES&H, provides management with potential solutions to correct the problems.

  6. Perform vendor on-site source inspection of precision machined or items fabricated as per applicable purchase orders, procurement quality assurance clauses, technical specifications, drawings and standards. Including conducting first articles inspections and vendor on-site site surveillance.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: 

  1. High school graduate or equivalent is required. Associates or higher degree in engineering or technical field is desirable.
  2. Eight (8) years of related experience in equivalent inspection activities associated with power plants, heavy industrial facilities, or similar facilities is required.
  3. Qualified to perform high precision measurements and receipt inspections utilizing hand held and automated high precision measuring and test equipment.
  4. Experience reading technical specifications, procedures, and drawings is required.
  5. Computer literacy and use experience and ability to write clear, concise reports - required.
  6. Willingness to travel to vendors/suppliers if requested by PPPL’s projects – required.
  7. Willingness to work 2nd shift and Overtime work if requested by PPPL’s projects – may be required.
  8. ASQ Quality Inspector Certification – highly desirable.
  9. AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) - preferred.

In addition to the requirements and certifications stated above, general familiarity with ASME, AWS, IEEE, NFPA and other construction codes is desirable.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Skill, ability, and experience in using modern measuring equipment (preferably including CMM, Digital Optical Comparator) to perform detailed inspections of machined parts and assembled components is highly desirable. 

Certificates and Licenses: 

  • ASQ Quality Inspector Certification – highly desirable.
  • AWS CWI Certification – preferred.

 

Physical Requirements: 

  • May need to work in environments with normal industrial hazards such as confined spaces, elevations, and where electrically/ mechanically energized equipment may be present. 

Working Conditions: 

  • 2nd Shift work, Weekend work, on-site supplier oversight and overtime work may be required.
