Overview

Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory has an opening for a Senior Industrial Hygienist to support the Occupational Safety and Health Division. This position will serve as PPPL’s senior Industrial Hygienist professional within the Laboratory as well as provide mentorship and guidance on the identification, recognition, and mitigation of chemical and physical stressors in the workplace as well as during field activities on assigned projects. The position will be responsible for assisting in the maintenance, and execution of the PPPL Industrial Hygiene program, consistent with Laboratory Environment, Safety, and Health, federal and contractual requirements.

 

As a senior industrial hygienist, this position will specialize in protecting the health and safety of workers in laboratory and industrial settings. This involves anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and recommending solutions to risks. You'll strive to protect workers from exposure to harmful substances, conditions, and activities.

Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • The candidate must be able to interpret field conditions and sampling results.
  • Must have excellent writing skills to prepare reports for senior review.
  • 10+ years of experience in the indoor air quality and industrial hygiene services.
  • Extensible background in the use of active and passive monitoring devices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Perform indoor air quality, mold, and industrial hygiene assessments.
  • Plan and execute field services, including ordering equipment and supplies, delivering to the site and laboratories, and tracking all to ensure on-time delivery and results.
  • Ordering and organization of various sampling media and safety supplies.
  • Calibrate and maintain scientific instrumentation.
  • Perform various direct reading, integrated air monitoring, and water sampling surveys/assessments.
  • Conducting and documenting qualitative assessments.
  • Be able to wear a respirator, safety harness and other safety equipment as needed.
  • Lead, mentor, and train junior Industrial Hygiene staff.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Broad level of knowledge equivalent to that which would be obtained in a course of study in specialty fields such as Occupational Safety or Industrial Hygiene, or an equivalent combination of relevant academic degree(s) and professional experience.
  • BS/BA in specialty field, science, or engineering. 
  • Master’s degree preferred, plus 10-15 years’ experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have extensive knowledge with anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and recommending solutions to risks. This position will strive to protect workers from exposure to harmful substances, conditions, and activities.
  • Previous experience must consist of improvement of workplace conditions and demonstrate work practices by quantifying exposure levels and assessing the risk to employees and recommending control measures to minimize exposure in accordance with federal and consensus standard requirements.
  • Solid knowledge of the specific OSHA occupational exposure limits and the American Conference of Industrial Hygienists Threshold Limit Values (ACGIH TLVs)

Certificates and Licenses

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist preferred or the ability to obtain certification within one year of hire.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to perform the following physical activities: extensive walking and standing, kneeling, squatting, use of tools/keyboard/writing, etc. Must be able to lift, push, pull and/ or
    carry up to 25 lbs.

Working Conditions

  • Most duties will be in a office environment with 35% of time spent in an industrial or laboratory setting. Occasional work outdoors, in varying weather, to include heat and cold may be required.
