Overview

The Industrial Safety Specialist will serve as a point of contact between the Plasma Science and Technology Department and the Occupational Safety and Health Division. They provide technical support, consultation to support various PPPL’s safety program elements.

 

As a member of the Occupational Safety & Health team, you will be responsible for Laboratory personnel and other safety members in maintaining and monitoring various occupational safety programs. These program elements include but are not limited to policy and procedural compliance and tracking, safety and health program management, injury reporting analysis, and safety training.


As the Industrial Safety Specialist, you will conduct task-specific job safety analyses for work performed in various industrial and mechanical areas. The specialist reviews safety programs to evaluate their effectiveness and ensures implementation. Assistance in the investigation of accidents and determining causative factors to prevent recurrence are among the responsibilities for this position. You will conduct health and safety reviews in various locations to identify unsafe conditions and processes that may exist and make appropriate recommendations. Additionally, you will provide oversight and support in field activities.

Core Duties

  • Provides customer service-based technical consultation. May serve as a Division Liaison or Health and Safety Representative. Understands the customer division’s work activities, personnel, and associated hazards.
  • Assists in hazard identification and the development of controls appropriate to the hazard and work being performed.
  • Assists with appropriate technical support required to implement and interpret PPPL ES&H policies and procedures.
  • Candidate must possess excellent writing skills.
  • Participates in incident reviews of illnesses, injuries, accidents, and other safety and environmental incidents.
  • Serves as the Lead and coordinates the EHS review of formal authorizations (e.g., WPC Activity, Job Hazard Analysis JHAs, Safety Assessment Documents, and other work packages or procedures.
  • Develops and/or leads cross-functional EHS teams when necessary to assess complex operations and equipment.
  • Pro-actively meets with Department Responsible Mangers, and supervisors to review needs, performance data and convey pertinent safety information.
  • Manage assigned programs such as Permit Required Confined Space, powered industrial and other special purpose vehicles, hot work, etc.
  • Conduct physical inspections of work areas for compliance, audit programs and collect/organize data needed for monthly/ annual reporting requirements.
  • Review process changes, events, structures, and equipment for safety compliance.
  • Any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Broad level of knowledge equivalent to that which would be obtained in a course of study in specialty fields such as Occupational Safety, or an equivalent combination of relevant academic degree(s) and/ or professional work experience.
  • BS/BA in specialty field, science, or engineering preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have solid knowledge and working experience in the detection and control of hazards involved within industrial environments. This may include however is not limited to Permit
  • Required Confined Spaces, hoisting and rigging, scaffolding, and excavations.
  • Must be able to apply OSHA, DOE, NFPA, ANSI, and other pertinent federal, state, and local regulatory requirements within a multi-program national laboratory.
  • Must demonstrate ability and experience in leading an interdisciplinary ES&H team and developing and presenting briefings, developing/ conducting training, and reports.
  • Must have ability to work under short-term deadlines while managing several different projects concurrently. Must have demonstrated strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to apply safe practices, applications and interpret laws/regulations as applicable to safety compliance and laboratory operations.
  • Must wear PPE when required (safety glasses, chemical resistant gloves, respirator, harnesses, etc.)
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office and Google applications.

Certificates and Licenses

  • Associate Safety Professional, Certified Safety Professional or the ability to work toward and obtain a professional certification desired.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to perform the following physical activities: extensive walking and standing, kneeling, squatting, use of tools/keyboard/writing, etc. Must be able to lift, push, pull and/or
    carry up to 25 lbs.

Working Conditions

  • Most duties will be in a field or industrial environment with 15% of time spent in an office setting.
  • Occasional work outdoors, in varying weather, to include heat and cold may be required.
