Responsibilities

The Technical Associate will support ongoing technical activities for the LTX-b experiment, which includes the experimental device along with all subsystems, including, but not limited to, vacuum pumping and monitoring systems, lithium, gas and neutral beam injection systems, component cooling, diagnostic devices and machine power supplies. The Technical Associate will assist in the design, fabrication, and operation of mechanical systems which will include, systems for the delivery and maintenance of lithium inventories in LTX-b The Technical Associate will perform assembly and installation of new diagnostics and other systems, assist in integrating these systems on LTX-b and perform lithium cleanup during vents. The Technical Associate will assist with maintaining and modifying as necessary the electrical power supplies for LTX-b, as well as the vacuum, control, and diagnostic systems. The observance of laboratory safe work practices and the maintenance of a safe working environment will be required. This position will also involve interfacing with, and providing assistance to, graduate students and staff, and mentoring apprentice technicians.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent along with experience in layout, design and fabrication of mechanical systems.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • The ability to work competently and safely with various hand and power tools is required.
  • Training and experience in the handling of lithium or other alkali metals is desirable.
  • The candidate must be proficient in the layout of fabrication work and in understanding drawings, schematics and technical documents.
  • The ability to use computers and pass on relevant technical training in a variety of subjects is required.
  • A basic ability to work with electrical and electronic equipment such as pumps, heaters, valves, process monitors and instruments is necessary.

Physical Requirements: 

  • This work involves climbing ladders, lifting items up to 50lbs, working in awkward positions and requires full mechanical dexterity.
