  • Overview

    The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory seeks to fill a post-doctoral research position for the investigation of 3D magnetic field effects in fusion plasmas and to use 3D fields to develop improved plasma conditions free of MHD instabilities in the KSTAR tokamak. The successful candidate will develop and apply numerical models for predicting the plasma response to 3D magnetic fields and testing these models in experiments on KSTAR and other world-leading fusion experiments. The candidate will also work with PPPL physicists to develop optimizing algorithms designing efficient  3D coils for KSTAR and future devices. The position will be based in Princeton NJ, and the candidate is expected to travel nationally and internationally to interact with the research team for KSTAR t in Korea and for other world leading tokamaks.

     

    Responsibilities

    The successful candidate will contribute to the development and implementation of models to plan experiments with 3D fields and will use experimental data to validate the physics models used to predict 3D field effects. Topics of study will include (and not limited to) the effect of 3D fields on rotation, transport and MHD stability and the use of predictive models to design improved operating conditions in KSTAR and other tokamaks. The developed models will be used to form and quantify the predictive 3D optimizing metrics based on the edge-localized resonant response for ELM control and core resonant response for EFC in typical and advanced KSTAR scenarios. Using the optimizing metrics, the candidate is expected to progressively design new KSTAR 3D coils. Various coil optimizers, including stellarator coil design tools will be utilized to generate a better geometric design for new in-vessel coils. In addition, these tools will be used to search for an innovative ex-vessel coil solution that would be more favorable for future reactor environments and perform a quantitative comparison between optimized in and ex-vessel coil geometries.

     

    Qualifications

    Applicant should have a Ph.D. in plasma physics or a similar field, with preference given to applicants with experience in developing and running MHD and transport models for fusion plasmas.
