The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory seeks to fill a post-doctoral research physicist position to work on scenario development and control on the KSTAR tokamak, with the primary focus on developing and applying reduced models for control applications in a fusion flight simulator. The successful candidate will be part of a team with the goal of developing integrated plasma control into predictive plasma simulations aimed at developing advanced steady-state plasma conditions and plasma controls in the Korean superconducting tokamak KSTAR. The position will be based in Princeton NJ and will require regular travel to Korea to interact with the experiment and researchers.
The successful candidate will contribute to the development of a fusion flight simulator, in an international collaboration between PPPL and the National Fusion Research Institute (Daejeon, South Korea). The flight simulator will use the time-dependent transport solver TRANSP and a plasma control system simulator (Simulink®) to evolve a plasma discharges under the effect of external actuators. The work includes development of reduced models for magnetic equilibrium and heating and current drive sources based on neural networks and machine learning methods. We are looking for a highly motivated scientist and a team worker who will collaborate closely with the KSTAR team and PPPL scientists to develop and successfully apply the fusion flight simulator in KSTAR. Applicants should have demonstrated experience in control engineering and/or in tokamak physics. The position is at the post-doctoral level.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in plasma physics or in control engineering. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in tokamak physics and control applications. Familiarity with time-dependent simulations, including control-oriented solvers, is highly desirable. Experience with machine learning, control algorithm design, and real-time algorithm implementation. Experience with the General Atomics Plasma Control System software is desirable but not essential. This position will be based in Princeton, NJ, and the successful candidate will be expected to travel both domestically and internationally.
