  • Overview

    The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory seeks to fill a post-doctoral Research Physicist position to work on understanding fast ion transport and loss in the JET tokamak in Culham, UK. The successful candidate will operate a fast-ion loss detector built by PPPL and will perform analysis of data and models to understand the interaction of fast ions with radio frequency and Alfvén frequency waves. The goal is to develop improved understanding of fast ion transport and loss in conditions approaching those of a burning plasmas and in preparation for a JET D-T campaign. The successful candidate will be based at the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab in NJ and will be expected to travel regularly to the UK to interact with the experiment and the JET research team.

    Responsibilities

    The successful candidate will be responsible for the operation and analysis of data from the “KA2 Lost Alpha” system that PPPL has developed and installed in collaboration with the JET tokamak. The candidate will analyze this and other data in order to develop an improved understanding of beam ion interactions with RF and Alfven frequency waves in preparation for a future D-T campaign in JET. The work is performed as part of an international collaboration between PPPL and JET (Culham, UK). The candidate will be expected to participate in JET experiments and to be an effective team member in a multi-institutional collaboration in fast ion physics. The position is at the post-doctoral level and the successful candidate will be expected to spend substantial time at JET in addition to other national and international travel in support of the research.

     

    Qualifications

    Applicants should have demonstrated skills in plasma diagnostics and data analysis techniques. Knowledge of energetic particle physics and transport processes in magnetically confined plasmas are a plus. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in plasma physics or equivalent degree. Experience in tokamak physics is highly desirable. Preference will be given to candidates with proven experience in experimental plasma physics and diagnostics techniques. Proficiency with coding is a plus. The position will be based in Princeton, N.J., and the successful candidate will be expected to travel both domestically and internationally.
