    The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is an internationally renown  collaborative national center for fusion energy and plasma science research, operated by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).     Responsibilities

    The Deputy Director of Operations (DDO) is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the laboratory, with full operational responsibilities for the Laboratory’s day-to-day activities, reporting to the Laboratory Director.  We are seeking a results-oriented visionary who has experience establishing an effective organizational culture, demonstrated flexibility and diplomacy, excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, and the ability to make intelligent and effective decisions in complex situations. 

     

    This position oversees the execution of Laboratory programs in accordance with established goals set by the Director, and provides leadership and direction to Department Heads and other designated personnel assigned to him or her. The Deputy Director of Operations works closely with the Deputy Director for Research, the Chief Financial Officer and other senior managers to make certain that the operational goals are aligned with the institutional goals.   In this position, you would be responsible for continuous assessments and improvement of safety, project management, engineering and the overall effectiveness of the laboratory operations. To be successful, this role must have effective communications with the Department of Energy, both onsite and offsite, on a regular basis, to ensure that all requirements and expectations are being met.  Additionally, this role is critical to keeping the Lab Director informed, can independently exercise authority as delegated from the Director, and assumes responsibility of the Laboratory in the Director’s absence. 

     

    • Provides management and direction for the operational leadership team, advocating a vision and strategy that advances PPPL’s mission while ensuring safe, effective, and efficient operations of the Laboratory.
    • Expected to plan, disseminate and execute an annual operational strategy, accountable for the performance results of multidisciplinary teams against such strategy, in support of the Laboratory research mission.
    • Has significant interactions with the DOE sponsor on management and operations topics.
    • Engages strategically with other DOE laboratories, with the University and with industry to position PPPL as a plasma physics leader.
    • Balances and provides guidance on DOE regulatory and policy requirements in a manner that mitigates institutional risk, yet provides flexibility to achieve the Laboratory’s scientific mission.
    • Builds a team atmosphere that allows prioritization of safety-first operations and open collaborative discussions.
    • Actively promotes a diverse and inclusive workforce.

     

    The DDO/COO is expected to develop and foster effective communications between DOE and the University to ensure an integrated operations approach to fulfilling the Laboratory research goals and objectives, to ensure the Lab is meeting the operating objectives and that the standards of performance are well understood, owned and overseen by management and staff.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 15 years of progressive managerial experience, including management of safety programs and/or project management. An advanced degree is physical science or engineering is preferred.
    • Strong skills in the areas of leadership, management, relationship building, communications and strategic planning.
    • Ability to thrive in a dynamic work setting leveraging skills in team building, time management, resource management and cost management.
    • Experience managing a DOE-supported research and development organization is preferred.
