  • Overview

    Provides electrical and mechanical engineering, controls, and operations support for some of the critical systems owned by Heating Group, including  Torus Systems and their instrumentation and control including Bakeout, Cooling Water, TVPS, RF, and Personnel Safety Systems. Provides authoritative leadership on technical requirements, design, fabrication, installation, testing, operation, maintenance, and upgrades for complex plasma experiments. Supports other Engineering Department engineering duties as needed.

    Responsibilities

    • Heating Lead Engineer: Provides Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, instrumentation and controls, and  technical operations support and assistance on complicated and varying Torus Systems and their electrical and mechanical support, including cooling water, vacuum, and bakeout systems and personnel safety systems. Maintain and provide run preparations. Apply knowledge of controls,  instrumentation, software, hardware, and computing systems to support operations. Experience with PLCs and LabView required. Position may oversee the work of others to accomplish project goals and objectives. Activities in industrial and laboratory situations.
    • NSTX-U Recovery COG: Performs COG engineer role in ENG system to perform WBS jobs and projects. Uses independent judgment in applying standard engineering knowledge, techniques, and formulae to create and interpret designs, calculations, drawings, sketches, and documents, offering creative solutions in solving engineering, technical, cost, space usage, schedule, and other standard project problems.  Takes direction from project to produce work requiring accuracy, quality, and timeliness.  Follows complex procedures to design, test, fabricate, install, maintain, and operate various electrical and mechanical systems in support of experimental devices and machines. Provides cost and schedule information and EVMS data.
    • Responsible Engineer: System owner on Torus Systems and pressure systems. Generates and follows complex standards and procedures within the context of laboratory policy, procedure, and protocols.
    • Knowledge of, support, and consistently apply the Laboratory’s Integrated Safety Management (ISM) program and all ES&H requirements.  Encourages others to be safety conscious and observe safety rules including use of safety equipment.  Reviews work for environmental impact.  Complies with ES&H Directives, DOE Orders and OSHA standards.  Attends required training.
    • Provides support for Heating Group Head duties as required.

    Qualifications

    Education:

    BS EE/ME Engineering degrees with Work Experience: 8 years Military, Industrial, or Laboratory work experience required including PLCs and LabView

     

    Or

     

    MS EE/ME and with Work Experience: 4 years Military, Industrial, or Laboratory work experience required including PLCs and LabView

     

    Physical Requirements:

    • Computer & control panel operations with full mental concentration.
    • Full hand, arm and leg mechanical dexterity and coordination.
    • Full or fully corrected vision, correct depth and color perception, occasional close work, work in low light conditions.
    • Moderate exertion and steps.
    • Routinely engaged in walking, standing or sitting.
    • Exposure to dust, temperature excursions, humidity, monitored low level radiation, noise, household and industrial chemicals, solvents and some fumes.
    • Working near hand tools, powered hand tools, machine shop tools and rotating equipment.
    • Working near moving vehicles, equipment, cranes, hoists, tractor, lifts and forklifts.
    • Adequate hearing and speaking for good communication, alarm annunciation, announcements, operations, troubleshooting, telephonic and electronic communiqués and situational awareness in a construction or industrial environment.
