The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory seeks outstanding candidates for postdoctoral position in the area of computational stellarator physics. The successful candidate will play a leading role in developing a state-of-the-art, fully three-dimensional version of the fluid turbulence code SOLEDGE3X, as part of PPPL’s international collaboration with CEA, France. The final goal will be modeling self consistently plasma and impurity transport in the edge of a magnetic fusion device, tokamaks and stellarators alike. The candidate will also perform numerical simulations with both the existing and improved versions of the SOLEDGE3X code, coupled with the Dust Injector Simulator (DIS) code, of powder injection experiments to be performed both in the WEST tokamak and the W7-X stellarator,...
The successful candidate will play a leading role in the development of a vertical multi-energy x-ray diagnostic on the WEST tokamak and its 2D tomographic integration with an existing radial view to enable a complete inference of core soft x-ray (SXR) emissivity profiles across multiple energy ranges simultaneously. This advanced diagnostic capability will be applied to study particle and thermal transport and to investigate the behavior of energetic electrons in lower hybrid current drive experiments. The multi-energy x-ray tomography system will also provide two-dimensional measurements of electron temperature and impurity content, focusing mainly on nitrogen and tungsten. The proposed work aims to exploit also a new real-time diagnostic data effort in combination with theory,...
The successful candidate will play a leading role in the development and maintenance of a core X-ray Imaging Crystal Spectrometer (XICS) on the JT-60SA tokamak, including its calibration, operation, tomographic integration, and data analysis. This advanced diagnostic capability will be applied to study particle, thermal, and momentum transport across Ohmic, NBI, and RF-heated plasma scenarios. The proposed work also aims to exploit new real-time diagnostic data capabilities in combination with theory, state-of-the-art computational modeling, and a rigorous verification and validation (V&V) framework developed by PPPL in collaboration with national and international partners. JT-60SA, located in Naka, Japan, is the largest and most powerful tokamak currently in operation worldwide. As...
