Funded by a new Department of Energy FES initiative on Scientific Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence for Fusion Energy Sciences, the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is seeking a research associate to develop machine learning algorithms for controlled nuclear fusion. PPPL is a world leading Department of Energy plasma physics laboratory focusing on fusion energy research and is managed by Princeton University. This is a multi-institutional project with components from PPPL, Princeton University, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Wisconsin, and SLAC. Machine learning is expected to play an integral role in plasma control systems in order to achieve stable plasma burn for fusion energy. This project will span the application of machine learning methods to real-time diagnostic analysis, predictive modeling of the evolution of the tokamak system, and development of machine learning control approaches, e.g., reinforcement learning. The successful candidate will work with the multi-institutional team to develop reduced/accelerated models of plasma behavior and approaches to manipulate available actuators to optimize experiment performance. The appointment will be based in Princeton, but experimental testing of algorithms is planned for the DIII-D tokamak in San Diego.

This job is located at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility at General Atomics in San Diego. Fusion is the perfect energy source to produce high power electricity with no environmental impacts and uses deuterium, a 200 million year supply, from seawater to produce energy. The highly technical team at DIII-D leads the world in its fusion control development focused on taming this 150 million degree C plasma. The Plasma Control System (PCS) controls fusion device plasmas around the world. The original version, created at the DIII-D fusion device, is exported to many of the other worldwide fusion devices for the control of plasma. Real time computing along with artificial intelligence and machine learning codes are used to grow the PCS control capabilities. This opening is for a Computer Programmer to create and maintain internal software programs for the DIII-D fusion reactor control. The ideal candidate has a strong background in software development and programming. He or she will use the Linux operating system and associated hardware.

This position is at the rank of Associate Research Physicist (equivalent to a postdoctoral position). The edge rotation and radial electric field are believed to strongly affect edge stability and transport properties, which are of critical importance for the viability of fusion energy. The successful applicant will work closely with PPPL theorists and experimentalists to compare theoretical models of edge rotation and radial electric field with experimental data from NSTX, NSTX-U, and DIII-D. The work will include data analysis and theoretical interpretation, in addition to the possible planning and execution of new experiments as needed. The successful candidate will be expected to develop, present, and publish novel physical results resulting from the work. The expected start date is August 1, 2021
